After October 10, 2025, Microsoft will no longer provide security updates or technical support for Windows 10. This is considered the end-of-support date. Your computer will continue to work, but the lack of security updates will make continued use of your Windows 10 computer a security risk.
Read our FAQs to better prepare for and understand this deadline.
What happens to my computer when Windows 10 reaches the end of support date?
Computers will continue to function, but Microsoft will not provide security patches or updates. This means that when hackers discover a way to manipulate the Windows 10 operating system or other connected features, your computer will be vulnerable to security exploits. It could be exceptionally risky to use a Windows 10 computer for online shopping, bank transactions, email or other tasks that interact with secure information. Many popular software programs will also discontinue support for Windows 10 and stop working properly/securely on an out-of-date computer.
Some business or enterprise networks may block Windows 10 computers from accessing their networks if they view them as a security risk.
Can I upgrade my existing computer to Windows 11?
You can check to see if your computer meets the minimum requirements to upgrade to Windows 11 by going to Settings –> Privacy and Security –> Windows Update. If your computer is eligible for a free Windows 11 upgrade, you should see an options in Windows Update to upgrade to Windows 11.
Will my OS version remain the same if I upgrade?
If you are currently running Windows 10 Pro and have an upgrade path to Windows 11, you will receive Windows 11 Pro. If you are currently running Windows 11 Home and have an upgrade path to Windows 11, you will receive Windows 11 Home. If you are using S mode in the Pro edition of Windows 10, you will need to switch out of S mode before upgrading to Windows 11 Pro. Windows 11 Pro is not available in S mode.
