A common reaction to global headlines is an increase in cyber attacks that play on current fears and concerns. We saw this with the COVID-19 pandemic: an increase in phishing emails offering everything from free COVID tests to software for online K-12 solutions and work-from-home solutions.
Annually during tax season, we see fake W2 and other tax document emails that seek to trick users into giving up personal information like social security numbers.
Now that banks are in the headlines, phishing schemes are evolving to target these fears.
Stu Sjouwerman, Founder and CEO of KnowBe4, reported that numerous new phishy domains were registered in the days following the SVB collapse. These domains were things like: login.svb[.]com and svbbailout[.]com.
You can read a summary of these specific attacks and warnings from Cyberwire Pro here.
There are several cyber security tools available to help your users stay safe online (firewalls, antivirus software, multi-factor authentication), but at the end of the day your users are making the decision whether or not to click on a phishing link or reply to a phishing email. ITS does partner with KnowBe4 to provide security awareness training to our clients. Using KnowBe4, ITS can send personalized phishing campaigns and cyber security trainings to your users.
